Located at the mouth of the mighty river Tumbes, in the ecoregion Tropical Pacific Ocean , near the border with Ecuador. It consists of islets and muddy canals, filled with fresh or salt water, which is directly related with the tides. In this sanctuary mangrove forest ecosystem rich and productive , suitable for ocean salinity and high temperatures are protected. These amazing forests are home to 105 species of fish, 34 crustaceans and 24 molluscs , which include the famous black scallops and shrimp living in the tangled mangrove roots .
This forest also provides refuge for over 200 species of birds among which the osprey and frigate bird , one of the characteristics of the site. In this sanctuary of wildlife species are protected in serious danger of extinction , such as Northwest or small otter otter , and the American crocodile , which have been hunted indiscriminately intense and high demand for their skins on the market black.
